100 Questions About Tuning Fork Level Switches-Part 6 | Materials and Corrosion Prevention 51–60

2026-10-06

51. Is SS316L Suitable for Tuning Fork Level Switches?

Yes. SS316L is the most common wetted material for standard corrosion-resistant tuning fork level switches. It offers good resistance to mild acids, alkalis, water, wastewater and general chemical solutions. It is low-carbon stainless steel, minimizing intergranular corrosion. Not suitable for strong oxidizing acids, concentrated chloride media or hot strong corrosives.

52. Can the Fork Be Made of PTFE?

Solid PTFE forks are rare because PTFE lacks sufficient rigidity to maintain stable vibration. Normally PTFE is used as a coating on metal fork bodies instead of a standalone fork material.

53. Can PFA-Coated Forks Be Used for Corrosive Chemicals?

Yes. PFA coating provides excellent chemical resistance against strong acids, alkalis and many aggressive solvents. It is a premium option for corrosion-resistant tuning fork level switches. Limitations: coating can be scratched by hard solid particles; temperature range is limited by coating properties.

54. How Do You Select Materials for Corrosive Media?

  1. Confirm medium type, concentration and temperature.
  2. Check chloride content and oxidation properties.
  3. Match wetted parts: SS316L for mild corrosion; PFA/PTFE coating for strong corrosives; special alloys for extreme conditions.
  4. Verify process temperature and pressure to avoid coating failure or metal corrosion.

55. What Chemicals Can Damage Stainless Steel Forks?

Concentrated hydrochloric acid, hot concentrated sulfuric acid, high-concentration chloride brines, strong bleach solutions, and hot nitric acid can cause pitting, crevice corrosion or stress cracking on SS304/SS316L forks.

56. Can a Tuning Fork Level Switch Be Used in Acid?

It depends on acid type, concentration and temperature. SS316L works for weak acids. For strong acids like concentrated HCl, use PFA-coated corrosion-resistant tuning fork level switches or special alloy probes.

57. Can It Be Used in Alkali?

Dilute alkalis can be handled by SS316L. Hot, highly concentrated caustic may attack stainless steel; PFA coating is recommended for strong alkali applications.

58. How Does Temperature Affect Material Selection?

Higher temperature accelerates chemical corrosion. Stainless steel’s corrosion resistance drops at elevated temperatures. Plastic coatings such as PFA also have maximum operating temperature limits. Always select material based on the maximum process temperature.

59. What Is the Difference Between SS304 and SS316L?

SS316L contains molybdenum and has superior resistance to chloride corrosion and mild chemicals compared to SS304. SS304 is cheaper, suitable for clean water and non-corrosive media. For corrosion-resistant tuning fork level switches, SS316L is preferred over SS304 for most chemical environments.

60. How Do You Specify a Corrosion-Resistant Fork Level Switch?

Define these parameters: medium name, concentration, operating temperature & pressure; wetted material (SS316L / PFA coating / alloy); probe length; process connection; explosion-proof requirement; output signal.
